Tsuwano’s built heritage: Kawada House
Kawada House
The Kawada family bought the estate from the Hashimoto family at the beginning of the Showa period(1926-1989), and used it for manufacturing and selling of furniture. From the early 1950s the shop front was rented out as a store and it was also used as a rest area for tourists. 
The building is one of the representative Taisho period (1912 – 1926) building in the old town of Tsuwano, with a store facing the main street, a traditional tatami room and a conjoint center Japanese garden. A unique feature is that a part of the ceiling of the store is removed, with a corridor like space around it. From the store area tooriniwa (dirt floor corridor) leads to the kitchen at the back side of the mansion.

河田家住宅
河田家が昭和初期に橋本本店より買い受け、その後家具の製造販売を行っていたという。戦後、店舗部分は貸店舗として利用されてきたが、今は観光客の休憩所として開放されている。
建物は津和野における大正期の町家を代表をする建築で、通りに面して店舗を構え、座敷奥には中庭を有している。店舗部分の天井を一部吹き抜けとし、それを囲うように廊下をまわしているのが特徴。店舗から奥に通り庭と抜け、台所に通じている。
